Mathnasium was founded in 2002 by Peter Markovitz and David Ullendorff, two pioneering entrepreneurs in the education industry. They decided to develop a concept that specializes in teaching children math because it can open doors to a successful future.
However, math has also been the subject that students need the most help with.
“In the United States, kids associate math with suffering,” said Founder David Ullendorff. “The idea of Mathnasium was to make math into a friendly subject that kids would enjoy. We want them to learn to love it, and that was our founding idea. From a purely business point of view, most kids who need tutoring need tutoring in math, and while parents can help with other subjects, they can’t help with math. The fact that we’re specialists makes us very attractive to parents.”
Markovitz and Ullendorff decided that Mathnasium would need to be a different kind of tutoring concept. They would create an environment that made math fun and would teach math to children in a way that made sense to them, and in the process, kids would fall in love with math.
In order to launch the concept, Markovitz and Ullendorff reached out to Larry Martinek, a beloved educator, teacher trainer, and curriculum consultant, to develop a curriculum that would be a game changer in the industry.
“We were founded to help K-12 kids really get a grip on their math skills, and dare I say it, truly love math,” Martinek says. “It’s been 20 years since we started, and this has become completely true. The students improve their math skills, and they really, really love math.”
In the 20+ years since Mathnasium was founded, it has grown to over 1,100 locations around the world. In that time, Mathnasium has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs launch businesses that have truly changed students’ lives.
The industry agrees. Mathnasium has been named a best-bet franchise opportunity by Entrepreneur magazine, Franchise Business Review, Franchise Gator, and many, many more.
